Morgenthau Lecture: National Interest in the Information Age

In the eighteenth Morgenthau Lecture at Carnegie Council in 1999, Harvard University's Distinguished Professor Joseph S. Nye, Jr. (1937-2025), former assistant secretary of defense and dean of Harvard's Kennedy School, discussed America's interests and how power is distributed in the "post-Cold War era," which he refers to as the "information age."

As Carnegie Council President Joel Rosenthal said in his introduction to this lecture, this series, which ran from 1981 to 2006, "provides us with an opportunity to revisit the profound themes suggested in Professor Morgenthau's work, particularly the timeless themes of ethics and politics, conscience and power." As he demonstrates in this still-relevant lecture, Professor Nye shows why he was the perfect scholar to carry on Morgenthau's legacy.
